Found at my Uncles House & a Few Berlin Postcards

This postcard was sent from my Grandpa to my Great Grandparents. He was serving in the Navy during World War Two and had two days off, so they went to Georgia. It's postmarked from Savannah Beach, July 21 1945.

This was written to my Great Uncle from a local radio talk show host. His show was "The Bob Steele Show" on WTIC Radio (in Connecticut). Apparently he mentioned my Uncle & his "kids" (which were his baby goats) on his show. This was written in 1975.

This one has no writing or caption on the back. I have no idea who the men on the front are.

This has a Navy Sailor on the front. It is addressed to someone who's name I don't recognize, but it was never mailed and no message was written on it.

This is a postcard from my hometown. They were selling these at our town fair this year. It is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Berlin Railroad Station. It was built in 1900, so the 100th year anniversary was actually 10 years ago. As you can see, the back has a special postmark and railroad stamp.

Here is another postcard from my hometown. I bought this one at our town fair as well. It's celebrating the 225th anniversary of the incorporation of the town, 1785-2010. The front has a few photos of places around town. One the back there is a special postmark as well. The caption on the back says, "The 'Yankee Peddler' originated with the manufacture of tinware in Berlin, CT. This industry was the catalyst for other businesses on the three main streets of Berlin. Shown counterclockwise: Worthington Ridge (formerly Main St), Berlin; East Berlin; and Kensington".

Found & One Postcrossing

All of these but one were found at my uncles house.

This one has information about the plane on the back: "PA-11 Piper Cub. Max Wt: 1220lb Max Baggage: 20lb Fuel: 17gal Oil: 1gal Level Flight: 90mph Max Glide or Drive: 122mph Ceiling: 14,500ft Empty Wt: 720lb Useful Load: 500lb MFG Started: April 30, 1947 HPC85 - original A-65". I think this was taken at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Canaan, CT.

This is the one I got from postcrossing. Nothing written on it, it was just sent in an envelop. On the back it says: "Zion National Park, Utah. Here pictured are two of the three Patriarchs. The Virgin River acting as natures sculptor, has carved out fantastic shapes resembling high cathedrals and temples".

I got this one from my uncle's house. I'm not sure if he visited there or if someone gave it to him. There's nothing written on the back of it.

I found this one at my uncle's house as well. This is a golf course near his house. On the back it says, "The Timberlin Golf Course, designed by Al Zikorus was opened on July 1, 1970. It is a municipal course under the direction of the Park and Recreation Commission in the town of Berlin, Connecticut. It is located in the center of Connecticut on Route 364".

Postcrossing + From Friends

Here is a postcard from a family friend. On the back it says "The Charles River. Boston, Massachusetts. Thousands of Bostonians have learned the fundamentals of sailing almost in the shadow of the John Hancock Buildings at the foot of the Beacon Hill where the bold signer of the Declaration of Independence lived".

This one is also from a family friend. On the front, there is the town hall for Needham, Massachusetts. On the back it says, "Located 12 miles southwest of Boston, Needham is a pleasant suburban town. It is easily accessible to major highways and, although it is residential in character, more than 50 manufacturers on 700 other business firms are located here".

This one is from my penpal, who sent it on her trip to Denmark. On the front of the postcard, the photos are of the Henne Strand. So beautiful!

This one is from postcrossing. I can't read the text printed on the card since it's in Ukrainian. The picture on the front is called "Spring" from a series called "Seasons". It was painted by the father of the person who sent me the card.

This is another postcrossing one. The photo on the front is of Lake Travis in Austin, Texas. The photo was taken by the person who sent the card. They actually included their flickr address so you can see their other photos.

Vintage Reprints

These are some more "vintage reprints" that I bought at Ocean State Job Lot. Couldn't resist buying them!

This is a painting by Abbott Handerson Thayer, 1849-1921. The painting is called "My Children". It was painted in 1897.

This is a photo of Ezra Loomis Pound. He was an American poet and critic and author of the "Cantos". This was taken near his studio in the Latin Quarter, Paris, in 1924.

I think everyone knows who this is. Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian political and spiritual leader. This photo was taken at 10 Downing Street, London, in 1931.

This is Herman Melville, an American author. On the back it states that his novel, "Moby Dick" (1851) is considered by many to be the pinnacle of American fiction.

This is W.C. Fields (1879-1946), who was an American comedy film star. I really like the coloring on this one!

This is the Library at Lucknow University, 1936. It's ink and watercolor on colored paper and it was done by Walter Burley Griffen.

This is a poster for a Sculpture Exhibition. It is believed to have been done by Vera Block. The object on the poster is Maurice Glickman's "Destitute (Mother and Child)".

This is "Strong Woman and Child", 1925. It was painted by Yasuo Kuniyoshi.

I love this one. It's John Belushi (1949-82).

This is from the de.fin'i.tive cat by Ilyse Segal. To be honest, I have no idea what the de.fin'i.tive cat is.

I totally love this one. It's Sarah Bernhardt, a French actor. The photo was by W&D Downey, London c. 1900.

This is "The Annunciation with Saints and Donors", called the "Latour d'Auvergne Triptych", c. 1497.

This is a photo of Agatha Christi, an English author, c. 1940.

This is a photo of Edith Wharton, an American novelist (1862-1937). She was the author of "The House of Mirth" and "The Age of Innocence".

This is Robert E. Lee, an American soldier. He was the leader of the armies of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The photo was by Mathew Brady, April 1865.

I think this one is so interesting. That chair is just.. weird, but I like it! This photo was taken by Ira Nowinski in 1976.

This is Helen Hayes (b. 1900). She is known as "The First Lady of American Theater", known for her range and versatility in performing in the theater, movies, radio, and television.

This is "Boys in men's room", New York City. The photo is by Neal Graham.

Random Postcards

Sorry it's been so long since I updated.. there's been a lot going on. I have a ton of postcards, but I've only had time to scan a few in. So here they are!

I've always wanted to go here! On the back it says, "MAID OF THE MIST. Visitors get their most breathtaking look at Niagara Falls from a voyage on the 'MAID OF THE MIST' which takes them right up to the very base of the natural wonder in all its thundering majesty. The 'MAIDS OF THE MIST' are seen here in front of the American Falls".

This one was written to Eric's Aunt Maureen. The caption on the back says, "Here, in Canada's Capital City, a former downtown commercial street was converted into a restful and attractive green area. This was a pioneering scheme carried out against strong opposition, but since, has been copied by many cities. It has given Ottawa a quality of pleasant sociability in contrast with the more solemn environment surrounding Canada's Parliament Buildings on nearby Parliament Hill". This was sent in 1978.

This was was written to Eric's mom. The caption on the back says, "On Parliament Hill in Canada's capital, this ancient military ritual comes to life. Colours such as those carried on parade have their origin in early times when Standards or flags were used to show the position of the commander, and to form a rallying point in battle. A Regiment could suffer no greater dishonour than to lose its Colours to the enemy". This was sent in 1978.

I thought this one was pretty. It was also sent in 1978. The caption on the back says, "Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. A tour boat cruises tree-lined Rideau Canal, winding through downtown Ottawa. To the right, in the background, is Convention Centre".

I love the edge on this one. It's kind of hard to see it, but all around it the edge is kind of scalloped. I have a few other cards like this and I always liked how it looks. The back of this one says, "The Gideon Putnam. On the Saratoga Spa, Saratoga Springs, NY. Known the world over for its elegance and charm... all the recreational and health facilities of America's finest Spa including Championship golf course, mineral waters & baths, famous Saratoga racing, unusual scenic surroundings... and near the world famous Saratoga Performing Arts Center".

This is one that I sent to Eric back in 2007 when I was on vacation in New Hampshire. I found it in his closest, haha. It's written in pencil so it's hard to see. The photo on the front is a sunset over Coffin Pond in the White Mountains.

I just loveee the stamps on this one. They are so fun. There isn't really anything written on it, my address was taking up most of the card. This was from postcrossing, by the way!

One Postcrossing, Two from my Uncle

I found this postcard at my great uncle's house. He had a goat farm, so this card was very fitting. He participated in multiple programs within the local schools talking about his experiences as a veteran, and someone sent him this as a thank you note.

I also found this one at my great uncle's house. On the back it says, "V.F.W National Home. Eaton Rapids, Michigan. Headquarters for the world's only fully equipped and fully trained "teenage" fire department".

I recieved this one through postcrossing! It was sent from Russia. If you'd like to get a closer look at the text, just click on the photo. On the back it says, "Moscow. View of the Kremlin from the Moscow-River".

Vintage Reprints

I found all of these postcards, which are vintage reprints, at our local Ocean State Job Lot. I was really excited, because they were so cheap!

This one is my favorite in the bunch. It's a print of "The Spirit of America", which was a World War One poster by Howard Chandler.

This one is an American Circus poster from 1904, which is on display at the Shelburne Museum, in Shelburne, Vermont.

This is a print of "Trail Riders" (1964/1965), by Thomas Hart Benton. I thought this one was so beautiful!

This is a print of the lithograph by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who lived from 1864-1901. Not going to lie.. I find this one a little creepy!

This is another World War One poster, by Walter H. Everett. It's called "Must Children Die and Mothers Plead in Vain?". The original was a lithograph, 40 x 29 3/4".

I absolutely love this one! It's called "Harbor Scene with St. Paul's Departure from Caesarea". It was painted with oil on copper, in 1596. It's by Jan Breughel the Elder, who was Flemish. He lived from 1568-1625. I believe it's currently at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

I just love the bathing suit she is wearing in this one! The woman is Greer Garson, an Anglo-Irish leading lady. She was born in 1908 and this photo was taken in 1939.

I think everyone knows who this is! Marilyn Monroe!

This one is Rock Hudson, who was an actor. This photo was taken in 1952, by Sid Avery.

I find this one to be the most interesting. I feel like these men would have such an interesting story to tell! Apparently they were tenant farmers in Chatham County, North Carolina. Taken in 1939 by Dorothea Lange.

I find this one so amusing simply because if you compare bodybuilders today to the man in this picture, they would look nothing alike! This photo was taken in 1914, by an unknown photographer.

This is Hedy Lamarr, Austrian born film star. She was born in 1913. The photo was taken by Laszlo Willinger in 1940.

This is J. Edgar Hoover & Shirley Temple. This was taken in 1938.

This one is Susan Hayward, an American actress. This photo was taken by Paul Hesse in 1940.

This is a roadside shrine in Northern France. This was taken by Allan Burgis in 1971.
