Found at my Uncles House & a Few Berlin Postcards

This postcard was sent from my Grandpa to my Great Grandparents. He was serving in the Navy during World War Two and had two days off, so they went to Georgia. It's postmarked from Savannah Beach, July 21 1945.

This was written to my Great Uncle from a local radio talk show host. His show was "The Bob Steele Show" on WTIC Radio (in Connecticut). Apparently he mentioned my Uncle & his "kids" (which were his baby goats) on his show. This was written in 1975.

This one has no writing or caption on the back. I have no idea who the men on the front are.

This has a Navy Sailor on the front. It is addressed to someone who's name I don't recognize, but it was never mailed and no message was written on it.

This is a postcard from my hometown. They were selling these at our town fair this year. It is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Berlin Railroad Station. It was built in 1900, so the 100th year anniversary was actually 10 years ago. As you can see, the back has a special postmark and railroad stamp.

Here is another postcard from my hometown. I bought this one at our town fair as well. It's celebrating the 225th anniversary of the incorporation of the town, 1785-2010. The front has a few photos of places around town. One the back there is a special postmark as well. The caption on the back says, "The 'Yankee Peddler' originated with the manufacture of tinware in Berlin, CT. This industry was the catalyst for other businesses on the three main streets of Berlin. Shown counterclockwise: Worthington Ridge (formerly Main St), Berlin; East Berlin; and Kensington".

Found & One Postcrossing

All of these but one were found at my uncles house.

This one has information about the plane on the back: "PA-11 Piper Cub. Max Wt: 1220lb Max Baggage: 20lb Fuel: 17gal Oil: 1gal Level Flight: 90mph Max Glide or Drive: 122mph Ceiling: 14,500ft Empty Wt: 720lb Useful Load: 500lb MFG Started: April 30, 1947 HPC85 - original A-65". I think this was taken at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Canaan, CT.

This is the one I got from postcrossing. Nothing written on it, it was just sent in an envelop. On the back it says: "Zion National Park, Utah. Here pictured are two of the three Patriarchs. The Virgin River acting as natures sculptor, has carved out fantastic shapes resembling high cathedrals and temples".

I got this one from my uncle's house. I'm not sure if he visited there or if someone gave it to him. There's nothing written on the back of it.

I found this one at my uncle's house as well. This is a golf course near his house. On the back it says, "The Timberlin Golf Course, designed by Al Zikorus was opened on July 1, 1970. It is a municipal course under the direction of the Park and Recreation Commission in the town of Berlin, Connecticut. It is located in the center of Connecticut on Route 364".

I originally thought this was one a photo, since it's really thick & shiny, but its actually a postcard. I don't know who the little girl is, or the significance of her. Kind of reminds me of an easter dress & basket!


I'm not sure what these are actually called, but I always called them radio calling cards. After you contacted someone on your radio, you would send them one of your cards. I guess it's not really a postcard, but I'm posting it anyway!


This one has a photo of the Yankee Office in Dublin, NH. It says on the back that it's a set of 6, one from each New England State. You could buy them individually for 25 cents each, or get them free with a magazine subscription to Yankee Magazine.

I have a few from this same place. They took a skiing trip here one year, and I found all the photos along with the post cards!

This one is from Great Hill Lake, in Cobalt, Connecticut. My family used to own a lake house there. But that was sold a while ago, and now we just own a lot there that we would like to build another cabin on.

This one is from the Berkshire Inn, located in Great Barrington Massachusetts. Looks like a nice little place to stay! I didn't bother blurring the address, because this is from 1941.

This one was sent from some of my Uncle's friends from Bruxelles aka Brussels, Belgium. I'm not sure who they are, or what they were doing in Belgium. But this was apparently sent in 1935, so again not blurring the address.


This one was sent from Great Barrington, Massachusetts in 1947. Most likely from the skiing trip :)

From Eric

Well it's been a few weeks since I've updated.. I've been really busy with school! These postcards are from my boyfriend, Eric :)

This is the first postcard he ever got me. I think this one is from four-ish years ago? He bought this when he was on vacation with his family in Rhode Island. I've always really liked this one!


This one is from three years ago. This was the first year that I went on vacation with his family, and the summer before I started college. On the front, there is the Block Island Ferry. The passage says: "Block Island is reached by ferryboat from Point Judith & Providence, Rhode Island and New London, Connecticut".


Eric attached this one to my Christmas presents this year :) It's from Kent Falls State Park, in CT. I'm really excited to go! The passage says: "Kent Falls State Park, scenic roadside parkland and picnic area along side Housatonic River". The water fall there is supposed to be really pretty, so I can't wait to take some photos!


This is another one I got for Christmas this year. It's from Captain's Cove Seaport in Bridgeport, Connecticut. I've never been there, but it looks pretty!

Antique Postcards

I've bought all of these from various antique shops over the years. I'm not bothering to blur out the addresses, since all the postcards are from the early 1900's.

This postcard is actually showing the lake that I vacation at every summer, so I was really excited to find it! It's Lake Winnisquam, in Tilton (Laconia), New Hampshire. If you'd like to try to read it, you can click on it. It was written in pencil, so it's pretty light. It's postmarked from Sept. 7, 1927. Right below this, I have a more recent photo of that bridge, which I took from our boat. It's from a slightly different angle, but I figured I'd include it :) It looks much different now!


Here is another postcard from Laconia, New Hampshire. It's a photo of "The Tavern". I'm not familiar with this place, and I'm not sure if it even still exists. If anyone knows, please leave a comment! It's postmarked June 9th, 1941 (I think, its hard for me to tell if that is a 1 or not).

This postcard is showing the view of Main Street west from the Railroad Track in Tilton, New Hampshire. This one was never mailed out, but it was copyrighted in 1907.

This one was from Syracuse University (I actually have two others from here as well). It was written on Sept. 20th, 1906. Click to make it larger, if you would like to read the writing!

This is my second one from Syracuse University. The writing is realllyyy tiny, and I can barely read it! On the front it's showing Sims Hall, Bowne Hall & Library. I've never visited Syracuse, so I'm not sure what it looks like today. This was mailed on July 28th, 1942. Near the stamp it says "Buy Defense Savings Bonds and Stamps", because this was during World War Two.

This is my last one from Syracuse University. The front is showing the Stadium at Syracuse University. Unfortunately, there is no year anywhere on this one.

This one is the State Capitol and Petersburg Express, in Hartford, Connecticut. This one is postmarked August 27, 1938. The stamp in the corner says "Buy U.S. Savings Bonds. Ask Your Postmaster".

Here's another one from Hartford, Connecticut, the photo was from Keney Park. I always thought this one was cute with the dog! It's postmarked March 11th, 1908.

Here is another one from Connecticut, specifically Circle Beach in East River. It was postmarked on August 8th, 1946. Unfortunately, someone ripped the stamp off :(

I thought this one was really cute! It's postmarked December 22, 1908. It's written in pencil, so it's really light, and the writings really small. Click it if you'd like to read :)

This one is the Court House of Records and Institute for Savings, located in Springfield, Massachusetts. It's postmarked September 23, 1944. This is really random, but I really love the handwritting on this one! And someone also tried to (unsuccesfully) rip the stamp off this one.

I always thought this one was so pretty. The pencil writting is extremely light on this one. It's postmarked August 7th, 1930. The postcard shows a sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean, from Old Orchard Beach in Maine. Another one with a ripped off stamp :(

Random Postcards

All of these postcards don't really fit into any of my other categories, so I'm just going to put them together.
This one features a photo of Shirley Temple. I got this in a little shop in New Hampshire a few years ago.
I got this beautiful postcard at a little store in Old Mistick Village this past summer.

This postcard is from Lyman Orchards, in CT. I got this when Eric & I went and did the corn maze two years ago. I wanted to go again last year, but we just didn't have time :(

I also got this one at Olde Mistick Village, at the army navy store. On the back it says "World War II Navy Recruitment of crew loading depth charges by McClelland Barclay".

This is definitely one of my favorite postcards. I got this at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant when I was on vacation in Florida. It was such a great resturant! They had a really good menu, and a great gift shop! I would love to go back!

New Britain Museum of American Art

The following postcards are from the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut. I visited in 2007 and these were some of the exhibits that were currently on display.
This display was up from January 7th - March 11, 2007. The painting on the postcard is entitled "Bridge" by Peter Waite, using acrylic on panels.


This postcard was marking a celebration including music, tours, food, and family activities that took place on April 1st 2007. The celebration was for the museum's new art lab and art studio. The painting on the front was by Frank DiGioia, entitled "Wedding Feast", using oil on canvas.

The text on the back states: "Featuring 104 works from two extraordinary private collections, this exhibition includes artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Maxfield Parrish, John Singer Sargent and Andrew Wyeth". The art on the front of the postcard is "Goodbye on the Mersey" by Jean Jacques-Joseph Tissot. It was painted in 1881 using oil on canvas.

This postcard is marking the exhibition which featured more than 100 of Christopher Hewat's crafted brass miniatures, which was held from March 18th - June 17th 2007. The piece on the front of the postcard is an untitled detail of brass construction.
